About the Fund
The Georgia Stevedore Association-International Longshoremen's Association Welfare Plan, Pension Plan, and Supplemental Vacation Benefits Plan, collectively known as ILA Employers Welfare Fund, was established in 1957 pursuant to the collective bargaining agreements effective October 1, 1956. It is a Taft-Hartley, Multi-Employer, Union-Management, Jointly Trusteed Trust Fund.
The Fund provides benefits to eligible active participants and retirees in the longshore industry and the container maintenance and repair industry for the ILA Local Unions in the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia. Benefits are also provided to certain non-bargaining unit employees approved by the Trustees. The benefits are:
- Welfare benefits (health insurance) for participants and their eligible dependents;
- Pension benefits for retired participants; and
- Supplemental Vacation benefits (Container Royalty) for eligible participants.
The benefits are totally funded by the contributing employers in accordance with the provisions of the applicable collective bargaining agreements.
The Fund is operated in accordance with applicable laws including, but not limited to the following acts: the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Multi-Employer Pension Plan Amendments Act (MPPAA), the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The Fund is also subject to applicable Federal and State Regulations and other Federal Agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Labor, and the Labor Management Relations Board.
A Board of Trustees, the members of which consist of three Labor Representatives and three Management Representatives, is the Plan Administrator and governs the Fund locally. The daily operations are directed by and under the supervision of the Fund Manager and Assistant Manager.
